In 2023 Vortica were approached by the University of Canterbury with a view to installing a small disc golf course in the Ilam fields sports area opposite the campus on Ilam Road, as part of UC’s 150th celebrations.
Numerous options were explored in terms of discontiguous baskets spread across a wider area, but a smaller and more cohesive 9-basket course was selected for. The location is challenging for numerous reasons, and design options were limited. Chris used all of his skill and experience to produce a shortish, but challenging 9-baskets, each with alternate pin positions.
If you follow the official OB rules regarding the sports fields, the challenge increases dramatically. And if the fields are in use – you must.
Basket one begins right outside the northern front of the Student Union building, and hole 2 starts in the Ilam fields, just across Ilam road, where the main sign is to be found.
The course is open to the public. However, please have some patience if playing during weekdays, as the course follows along where students and the public often walk.
This is a great course for you to attack with nothing but putters, and see how you go.
Your skills will evolve rapidly, if you do.
Vortica wishes to thank the University for its commitment to establishing disc golf within the university grounds, and for adding to the ever growing number of Community Courses installed by Vortica.
The nascent University Disc Golf Club already has over 100 members – and so the future of disc golf at UC is assured.
