The Caroline Bay course was championed by Rotary in Timaru, by very passionate people who didn’t know much about disc golf. They had designed and installed a course, but then approached Martin Galley, to offer advice on their installed design.
Martin called for various tweaks to the existing design to improve safety and flow of the course. This work was undertaken by Rotary, once again.
The course today has evolved into a pleasing, but heavily wind-affected course, as it sits right on the beach, where the thermal easterly is prevalent. Each basket has a cylinder atop it, providing some fascinating facts about Timaru.
The course is not playable around Christmas time, due to campers being permitted to set up on some fairways, and with how many people visit the bay.
However, there is an excellent Vortica-designed 9-basket community course just 5 minutes away, at West End Park, and just 15 minutes away is the brilliant Torepe Fields in Temuka, well-designed by Timaru’s Chris Smith.
