In early 2019, stalwart Timaru disc golfer and promoter Chris Smith contacted Chris Davies, saying that he had some funding for a small DGC and he had an idea of where it could go. That did not pan out, but a search with Google Maps revealed the tantalising prospect of a 9-basket course right inside Timaru – at West End Park.
Google Streetview seemed to confirm the nature of the reserve, and so Martin and Chris met up with Chris Smith, and in under half a day we created a classic Vortica Community Course design as defined by Vortica elsewhere. We spent the rest of the day making ourselves feel good about the decisions we’d come to in the morning, and that was that.
The course plays down, up, and across a gully which also acts as a drainage basin. It has lush lawns, and is well-kept at all times. The design is reminiscent of Chris's Queenspark Reserve DGC design in Christchurch, where beginners will have a great time, and competent players of the game will be challenged to make birdies.
This is yet another Vortica Community Course design with very high re-playability factor, which brings players back again and again, exactly as intended.
The installation was superbly performed by Chris Smith with great attention to detail.
