In early 2019, the Life In Vacant Spaces Trust contacted Vortica asking to design a DGC in a small part of the Red Zone they’d leased from LandCare. It was to feature many different community projects, most of which failed to flourish, except for disc golf, which exploded.

This was arguably the worst part of the Red Zone, with roughly 1/3rd of the site having no trees at all, due to the subdivision being so new that many of the sections remained unsold on this 7 hectare area.

Trees are what make a course, and this meant several initial designs for an 18-basket pitch and putt course – but all proved to be unconvincing in the designer’s mind.

Chris finally reduced the basket count to 9, and for the very first time, offered Christchurch disc golfers some longer holes upon which they could finally unleash all their power, and still not be able to reach the basket – with 5 baskets requiring two shots.

And so Vortica installed Chris’s genuinely challenging design; where discs could be lost in the flax, or high into the pond OB on 7, or into the plethora of foliage on the tricky par 4, No.4… not for the newbie, or the scared, Brooker Ave, especially in the constant easterly wind, had some real teeth.

Brooker’s appeal to the big-arm-boys maintained a solid amount of play, which was then split when Chris designed and installed the 4th DGC for Christchurch, at the old Ascot golf course, close by.

In 2023, Life In Vacant Spaces informed Vortica they needed to get the asset off their books, and so Chris requested LIVS donate all the course equipment to Jaye Pukepuke and his Bros For Change – an amazing organisation that works with youth and disc golf.

Upon taking possession of the course, Jaye almost completely redesigned the course, increasing the basket count to 18, and increasing the length, difficulty and complexity of the course to a very high level indeed. Even 12 over par scores close to 900 on a decent day at the New Brooker Ave DGC.

A few elements of the original course design remain, connecting the historic first design to Jaye’s fantastic modern improvements, which required a huge amount of effort from a large number of people. Thanks, Jaye & B4C!
